NSK’S Apology for modernity

The NSK State Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale takes an unexpected and brave step, locating the NSK State in Time project in cultural-political context, taking responsibility for the resources IRWIN and other components of NSK have mobilised over the past years and giving response to some of the problematic aspects of the project. There has been a perpetual temptation on the part of some NSK State Citizens to imagine that this State in Time stands completely outside any geographical location. It is, after all, a State in Time as opposed to a State in Space. But this imaginary location of the State – and it must always necessarily be a location of some kind for it to exist – is symbolically anchored in a series of coordinates in which Western Nation States were born and through which Western States have offered themselves, sometimes imposed themselves as models for political organisation across the rest of the globe. Apology for Modernity, A Measured Dissent

by on May.14, 2017, under Articles, NSK State

The opportunity to engage with the State through our citizenship is always exciting, and doubly so when the instigators of the action are the members of Irwin, one of the collectives responsible for the creation of the NSK State itself. In what might be their first state-wide call-up since the Congress in 2010, Irwin is now soliciting a straight up or down vote on Apology for Modernity, the central document to their NSK State Pavilion in Venice this year. Through this statement and the actions and lectures of the Pavilion the members of Irwin seek to recognize the failings of Modernism as they have affected non-Western states where citizens have been forced to leave and seek refuge, often in the West itself where the offense is doubled by their treatment on arrival. A Confirmation of Civil Unrest

by on May.11, 2017, under Articles, NSK State

Avi Pitchon at the First NSK Citizens Congress 23.10.2010, Berlin

I, NSK Diplomat, Congressman and Timekeeper, have answered “no” in IRWIN’s referendum regarding “An Apology for Modernity”, presented at the NSK State’s Venice Pavilion, for two crucial reasons.

1. once the NSK State shifts from art to politics, it by definition shifts from time to space, it forfeits its mastery over its infinite probablities and willingly collapses into the measurable present. Thus, the NSK State effectively ceases to exist

2. The apology is such an ultimate manifestation of #1, that I’m tempted to think it’s some trick; a Houdini disappearing act…But as long as that is apparently not the case, my answer remains “no” – however, that is not because I necessarily disagree with the contents of the apology, but precisely because, nuances (west, modernism, 1968) aside, the general sentiment expressed in it is something everyone can/would agree with, especially in the current zeitgeist of ‘artivism’ prevalent in biennales, documentas et al. It is turning our state from a mischievious, trickster fairy to an obediant, tame beauty queen.

My loyalty to the NSK State have always stemmed from trusting it to say and do what no one else says or does. With this apology, the NSK State loses relevance, and not gains any. It becomes assimilated. And then burns in a horrible flash, like a vampire native of the black star exposed to the blinding light of the transient.

I will not stand back and watch the NSK State loses its nerves.

Third International NSK State Dacha

NSK State Dacha in New Mexico

The Third International NSK State Dacha will be held Saturday, December 26th 2015 at 8:00PM

The NSK State Dacha is an annual citizen-driven initiative and temporary sovereign zone in the central New Mexican Desert. NSK Citizens and guests are invited to spend a holiday evening in an old Norwegian style log villa located on Highland Hill, where it once overlooked tuberculosis sanitariums, a psychiatric asylum, and breathtakingly crimson sunsets. Hosted by artist david K., past events have included NSK-related projections and programming, exhibitions, and LAIBACH tribute musical performances.

This year the Dacha presents an interactive multimedia installation – Nationalist Sound Klinik – a collective of musicians and sound artists featuring members of Enemy Tone, Unnatural Element, and Wurm. The aim of Nationalist Sound Klinik is to address the human condition while critiquing political and media reaction to the atrocities occurring in Syria and the resulting refugee crisis.

Visitors without NSK State passports will be issued appropriate visa documentation.
Libations will be available (guests must be 21+).

ADMISSION IS FREE, BUT AN INVITATION IS REQUIRED
