Gravitation Zero – Noordung Biomechanics

On 15 December 1999 Gravitation Zero – Noordung Biomechanics, the first theatre performance in alternating-microgravity conditions was staged in a IL-76MDK flying laboratory in Russia.

The performance was executed in a set of two parabolic flights of 10 parabolas, with a total of 16 audience members and 7 participating actors. The project had a specially designed set, audience seats and a 4 channel soundtrack that was transmitted wirelessly.

The performance was based on the conflict of the body and bone transformation in microgravity and the Herman Potočnik Noordung 1929 book The Problem of Space Travel – The Rocket Motor (Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraum – der Raketen-Motor).

The director of the performance was Dragan Živadinov, set design Staša Zupančič and Andraž Torkar, costume design Dunja Zupančič, flight director: Marko Peljhan.

The performances and the flights lasted for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
